About the Excursion

During the Meteora excursion, you will visit three monasteries. Following that, you will have free time for lunch and strolls in the picturesque village of Kastraki. On the way back to Athens, a brief stop will be made in Thermopylae, the site where 300 Spartans faced the Persian army. You will witness the battlefield and the statue of Leonidas. A one-day trip to Meteora is a wonderful opportunity to witness breathtaking landscapes and experience the grandeur of Greek Orthodox traditions.

The complex of monasteries collectively known as "Meteora" is considered one of the modern wonders of the world. Once a refuge for hundreds of Orthodox monks, it has now become a popular tourist route and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Meteoric rocks date back millions of years. In the almost inaccessible peaks of sandstone, monks settled on these "heavenly columns" from the 11th century. While twenty-four monasteries were originally built despite incredible challenges, only six remain today. Their 16th-century frescoes mark a key stage in the development of post-Byzantine painting. The nearest town is Kalambaka.

• The duration of this tour is approximately 12 hours.
• There is a strict dress code in the monasteries. Men should wear shorts below the knee, and women should wear long skirts, with covered shoulders. Skirts are provided for ladies at the entrances of all monasteries.
